For your eyes only - a 007 museum opens in Keswick
The biggest private collection in the world of James Bond movie memorabilia will form the basis of a purpose built 007 tribute museum opening next week in the unlikely setting of Cumbrias tourist capital.
Bond enthusiast Peter Nelson has built up a unique collection of Bond creator Ian Flemings special agents cars, weaponry and gadgets which will all be on show in Keswick where he already runs another museum packed with many of the Cars of the Stars vehicles that have become movie and television icons over the past 30 years.
Peters astonishing collection of Bond cars including Aston Martins and Lotus vehicles genuinely driven by 007s including Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan will form the basis of the new museum.
But also on show will be the actual Russian T55 main battle tank used in the Bond film Goldeneye as well as boats, planes and even a Bell Jetranger helicopter.
Thirty years ago Peter first began collecting vehicles which had become almost as big as the stars who drove them in films or television shows including Del Boy Trotters three wheeler van, the red and white Starsky and Hutch Ford Gran Torino, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cars, the Herbie Love Bug from the Lindsey Lohan film, the Back to the Future DeLorean, and David Hasselhoffs K.I.T.T Knightrider supercar. They are now on display in his Cars of the Stars museum in Keswick.
During his collecting spree Peter began acquiring Bond cars such as the Vanquish Aston Martin driven by Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day; the DB5 from Goldeneye; the Aston Martin V8 from Living Daylights; the Roger Moore white Lotus Esprit Turbo from For Your Eyes Only; the Lotus Esprit S1 from The Spy Who Loves Me; the Mustang from Diamonds are Forever; the Renault taxi from A View to Kill; and the Tuk Tuk taxi from Octopussy.
But also on show will be the underwater submarine from The Spy Who Loves Me; a rocket firing motorcycle from Thunderball; the hovercraft from Die Another Day; the Glastron speedboat from Live and Let Die; and, of course, that Russian tank.
Peter found the 42 tons tank by trawling the internet then making the owner an offer he couldnt refuse. But he then had to travel to Oxford for tank driving lessons which he describes as a fantastic experience.
It was finally delivered to Keswick by low-loader and reversed into the museum with two centimetres width to spare on either side of the tank.
This is a museum totally dedicated to the fans of James Bond, said Peter Nelson, who read his first 007 book as a schoolboy and has been hooked on them ever since.
Like many people I grew up with James Bond movies and it has been a thrill to acquire so many cars and props from the films for what I believe is now the biggest private collection of 007 memorabilia in the world.
Some of the items have been donated by the actors and crews from the films, and many of the vehicles going on show in our new museum have never been seen by the public before.
Ask Peter who his favourite Bond is and he says: Each one was perfect for the era the films were made. But my own personal favourite film is Goldfinger because I believe the gadget laden Aston Martin DB5 is the greatest car ever made. And he should know he owns two!
The museum will open to the public on Sunday April 5th when Peter will unveil a bust in memory of what would have been the 100th birthday of the great Bond movie producer Albert R (Cubby) Broccoli.

The Bond Museum, which opened in April, is in an unexpected location, the cutesy town of Keswick in the English Lake District. Keswick is a town of muddy boots, boat cruises and gorgeous West Highland terriers walking their owners around. Its markets, pubs and B&Bs reek of a cheerful, old-fashioned quaintness, yet Keswick has something of a quirky streak...

On location in the English countryside, a stellar and revved-up cast awaits fans, writes David Whitley. On a list of cool things to find in a scrapyard, this has to be near the top. It has seen better days but the battered contraption in front of me is one of the coolest vehicles of all time. Anyone with a passing interest in James Bond will recognise the car as the Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me, the one that turns into a submarine as Roger Moore drives it into the sea...

Carlisles very own Harvey Tye, a 13-year-old, who suffers from a life-limiting muscle wasting condition, saw his dreams come true when he spent the day living just like his hero, 007. He looked every inch the super spy as he climbed into his Aston Martin and fought off some villains.
